Why The Mountains?

I thought I’d start here, this is, after all my first blog post and the reason I’m starting to write, produce content and have a laugh. Who knows what garbage will take itself from my brain to the page :)

I mean, for starters, look at this....Lake Louse, Canada.

Why though?

Having a look through my blog, you’ve possibly stumbled across my ‘About Me’ or even read the description on the Home Page.

I’ve always loved the outdoors, whether that’s playing footy, going for hikes or seeing new places.

But I feel that only in the last 6/7 years have I really thought to myself, Jeez, I absolutely love this shit.

I think it’s a combination of the unbelievable views (sometimes), the escape and the (sometimes) stillness and calmness when it’s just you and your squad and nothing else for miles.

This, combined with an amazing feeling of, wow I am absolutely insignificant in this world when you’re surrounded by landscapes that are millions of years old and the fact that you’re keeping your body moving and getting a sweat on. It’s a superb cocktail of awesomeness.

I’ve grown up watching countless movies and documentaries on Everest, The Himalayas, Mountaineering, The Andes, The Alps and being a massive fan of all things wildlife and nature. Shout out to David Attenborough, the UK’s public Grandad.

Combining this love with travelling has allowed me to get some amazing destinations in my vacation time and pretty much every place I’ve been over the last 6/7 years, I’ve tried to make sure I’ve gotten my fix of some sort of unreal view, hiking route or outdoor trip/activity.

As I’ve gotten older, the nights out have slowed down, mates are busier with families (plus, most can’t be arsed getting to The Lake District or Wales every other weekend anyway).

Myself, Jo and Bali do get out on adventures locally in the UK as much as we can too, when the weather feels like being sound, which helps with keeping up the fitness training and ticking off some more Wainwrights here and there.

My interest has definitely upped to another level the past couple of years though, watching heroes such as Kenton Cool, Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin, Alex Honnold, Chris Bonnington, Lynn Hill, Nims Purja, Lhakpa Sherpa, Kami Rita Sherpa, Junko Tabei, Simon Yates, Caroline Destivell…. The list goes on and on.

Alex Honnold
Kenton Cool has summitted Everest 18 times!

I’ve started reading more, watching more, researching more, listening more and although I do love a day out in The Lake District, I want to take it up another level. I want to learn more and do more.

So for the last 18 months, I’ve started to up the physical game too. Completing more challenging, albeit still comfortable, UK scrambles, UK challenges (more to come on these), generally more hiking whenever I have the free time and even re-starting the Wainwrights to bag them all ‘officially’.

I’ve recently (July 2024) taken a scrambling course and will hopefully continue learning the more technical side of Mountaineering and Rock Climbing over the next year as well as getting to grips with some alpine training as I aim to complete (fingers crossed, wallet permitting, time permitting) Mont Blanc in 2025.

So here we are, I’ve decided to log it all down, take photos and videos and hopefully connect with a load of cool people who love doing the same thing, remember to give me a follow on instagram:- Hiking The Earth

I almost forgot this little thing of trying to get to the highest point of as many countries as possible, building up to the bigger bastards as I learn the trade. Most of all improving, enjoying myself and following a passion.

Peace Out!

Danny
