What are The Lake District Wainwrights

The Lake District, nestled in the northwest of England, is renowned for its stunning landscapes, tranquil lakes, majestic fells and pissing down rain (it is England of course :). Among these, the fells, or hills, have a special place in the hearts of outdoor enthusiasts, largely thanks to Alfred Wainwright. Wainwright was a passionate walker and author who documented the Lake District fells in a series of seven guidebooks, famously known as “Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.”, each guide corresponds to different parts of The Lake District

Wainwright identified 214 fells across the Lake District, which vary in height, difficulty, and accessibility. These fells range from a hill your Nan could defo summit, to challenging peaks, providing a diverse range of walking experiences.

He moved to Kendal from Blackburn in 1941 and this is where his exploration of The Lake District began. His love for the fells led him to create detailed hand-drawn maps and illustrations, partnered with eloquent descriptions of each fell.

The guides where published between 1955 and 1966 and have since become national favourites and the basis of the Wainwright challenge!

The Wainwright Challenge

Completing all 214 fells across The Lake District is a popular challenge for walkers and hikers, by bagging peaks and adding them to your tick list is a life time goal for some, or a 5 day 12 hour and 14 minute record for Jon Kelly in May 2022 – WTF.

Personally, I like bagging multiple peaks in one day, I find it more challenging and a lot more fun to make a full day of it. Especially when you’re driving a 3-4 hours round-trip, why not make the most of it.

So last year I found a few online pages where you can complete all of The Wainwrights in 36 routes, 45 routes, 59 routes and so on.

I was drawn to the 36 routes, faster and harder etc, and found this great site:-https://www.walkingenglishman.com/walkingthewainwrights.html – you can download the routes and there are maps to the start points. I’m hoping to fill my blog too with all of these as I progress.
