Country High Point #4 – The Netherlands – The Vaalserberg (322m) *(Mainland)

The Netherlands, famous for its flat landscapes and windmills, isn’t completely flat. Tucked away in the southernmost province of Limburg lies Vaalserberg, the highest point in the country, standing at a modest 322.7 metres (1,059 feet) which to give some context is only 30 metres taller than the smallest Wainwright .

Vaalserberg is more than just the highest point; it’s where three countries meet. Known as the Drielandenpunt, this tri-border area connects the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. I’d wanted to get to this point for a number of years after seeing it online and thought it looked like a fun place to visit.

There were cafes, restaurants, kids play areas, nature trails and even a labyrinth here.

I thought it was a great little experience, I whipped out Google Maps and was able to jog between 3 different countries in about 30 seconds.

I booked this little venture out of the blue and dragged Jo along.

We flew into Brussels, Belgium, hired a car and on this trip I bagged 3 more country high points in 24 hours.

Not much on the hiking data below, you can park up and walk to both the tri-point and Vaalserberg in a few minutes.

Route Overview

We hired a car from Brussels airport and drove straight to Trois Frontières (“three borders”) it took about an hour.

There was plenty of parking on the road side, we had a little nose round, got some Belgium fries and messed around popping between the different countries with a hop and a jump.

The country tri-point is below, we got a photo of this first and then wandered over to Mount Vaalserberg’s ‘Trig’ point if you want to call it that and there I hit country high point number 4 and the first of 3 on this flying trip.

After this, we detour through Aachen for a nose and then back over to Belgium for country high point 5.
