The highest point of San Marino was my last and final stop on this trip.

Another tiny landlocked country, about 1.5 hours away from Bologna and a population of about 35,000, literally the same as my local town, it’s the oldest republic in the world and very kindly Napoleon decided to leave these peeps alone and let them crack on when he was invading everywhere.

Monte Titano is the highest point of this nation and accessed at the very top of the old town amongst the three towers of San Marino which were setup as view points and as a defence system.

The three towers are called, Guaita, Cesta and Montale.

The high point is actually accessed by heading to the second tower Cesta, you have to pay to enter this, it has a small weapons museum as part of it and the high point is at the top of this museum with amazing views of the Italian countryside.

It was 9 euro for both this tower and also the first tower which was worth a look around too.

Although it was only a quick stay, San Marino was definitely worth the visit and I’d recommend heading there if you ever get the chance, it was like a fairytale town up in the hills.

Everywhere was spotless and the views were unreal.

Route Overview

After leaving Vatican City and Rome, I took a train to Bologna and jumped a second train to the airport where I hired another car. From Bologna airport it took just under two hours to reach my hotel which was near the top of San Marino old town, accessed via many winding roads.

I parked in the P6 carpark, I think there’s about 12 car parks dotted on different levels of the old town, I believe in the summer they fill up really quick.

I went out for a quick pizza and a pint and got my head down before taking a walk first thing up to the towers.

The third tower area is open all the time, but the second tower didn’t open until 9am so I just pottered about until I could get in.

Depending on where you start the walk up to the top of the towers, it’ll only take between 10-20 minutes, even from the lower parts of the town.
